One of the ten remaining Ghanaian languages that is yet to have the Bible translated into it for use shall receive full funding from His Royal Majesty’s Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, as part of his support for language development and mother tongue Bible translation in Ghana.
His Royal Majesty’s commitment was announced in a speech read on his behalf at the 2nd Major Donor Fundraising event for ‘Vision 2020:Operation Cover The Land’ which is a race to translate the Bible into all the languages in Ghana where translation is needed. It was held in Kumasi on Friday, October 19, 2018.
“I am, therefore, honoured to approve the commissioning of one GILLBT language project to mark the 20th Anniversary of my ascension to the Golden Stool come 2019”, he said.
His Royal Majesty, Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, Asantehene, the occupant of the Golden stool, has often emphasized the need for the ownership of the processes for mother tongue Bible translation in Africa to be in African hands.
At the launch of ‘Vision 2020: Operation Cover The Land in 2016’, he said in a speech read on his behalf;
“The vision to radically transform Bible translation practice in Africa by locating the ownership of these processes in African hands, through the development of an African financial platform, is one I identify with and support”.
Otumfuo Osei Tutu II, also announced his plan to set up a Bible Translation Fund in collaboration with other Chiefs to ensure the completion of the language development and Bible translation task in Ghana.
“I am also considering the possibility of establishing an Otumfuo Bible Translation Fund that will establish a Royals’ platform to mobilise support among our Chiefs to ensure the completion of the language development and Bible translation task in Ghana”, he disclosed.
